Paint it Black – Greetings, Fellow Insomniacs [Hardcore Punk] (2013)

  • CVA is one of my all time favorite albums.

17 songs in about 19 minutes. The variety of topics, the pacing, the mood. It just hits hard. It’s a shame the band doesn’t like it as much as their “newer” stuff.

  • I’ve seen this band maybe a half dozen times over the last 20 years. They’re an incredible and often lesser considered hardcore band from the early 2000s. Sort of an outlier back then too though, when melodic hardcore was big they were signed to Jade Tree and not doing super typical tour packages. I mean, they had Oktopus from Dalek co-produce a record even.

They played my hometown maybe 17-18 years back. A girl I was spending time with, who was kind of aloof but disarming in a way where she could approach strangers and it didn’t seem personal or weird, approached Paint it Black’s then-drummer Dave Wagenschutz because I’d told her in passing that he was “one of four” big influences on my drumming, mostly during his time in Good Riddance and Kid Dynamite.

The girl talked to Dave for a minute, and shortly after came back with a show flyer, which Dave had signed: “To Bizzum – one of four, Dave.” Cute gesture from the girl, and cool of Dave to agree to a pretty silly request.

By all accounts, just a great group of guys who made (MAKE someday?) important music.
