Cult classic
Out of all the movies I have ever watched, this was one of them
It’s bad in a good way and if one knows the story of the making of the movie makes it much much better.
I genuinely enjoyed this movie when I was a kid. It had not much to do with Mario but it was a fun ride for a young kid.
I was so confused and disappointed when this came out… years later a rewatch (and a mental subtraction of it’s source material) and you wind up with a weird, unique and fun dystopian sci-fi film. David Snyder, the art designer, also worked on Blade Runner!

John Leguizamo has been hella salty over the new mario movie and not being casted in it.
TIL that Mario (1993) was played by the same guy as Eddie Valiant from Who Framed Roger Rabbit
I remember leaving the theater feeling really confused when I saw this one.
So bad, it was good.
I was like 12 years old then. Had been playing Mario since I was 5…and I never saw that movie because I felt like I was “too old”.
Meanwhile, I’m 41 now, went to see John Wick: Chapter 4 this week, saw a preview for Mario World and was like “I’m probably going to watch this.”
Famous Italian actors.
I watched it when I was 12. Not ashamed (well maybe a bit) to say that I love this movie. Still have warm memories of watching this with my cousins. Was so pumped up with that ending where a sequel was implied. Still waiting for that sequel
PREPARE TO BE DE-FUNGUSED.
It isn’t hard to see why, any person with eyeballs can tell you that the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie is bad, but what most people don’t know is that The Super Mario Bros. movie has one of the most infamous and disastrous behind the scenes productions in the history of movies.
#Anything that could go wrong, went very wrong. [Story here](https://collider.com/super-mario-bros-movie-1993-history-explained/)
Bob Hoskins proved himself as one of the greats in this
Completely plastered brit doing a vaguely offensive Italian accent, fucking flawlessly mind you.
Saw this with my gf when I was 20, expectations were low and we both ended up loving it, maybe I should re-watch it some day. I kind of remember Dennis Hopper being pretty cool as well.
Fun Fact: Years later Leguizamo would once again battle antagonist Dennis Hopper in George A Romero’s Land of the Dead
I remember watching this on TV at night when my parents were asleep. Sometimes those where the best even if the movie was bad, the discovery trait of a child enhances the experience and when I think back I can still feel it slightly. What sticks out to me are the darker night time city scenes.
Don’t care what everyone says. I love this movie! It was an interesting take on a dystopian world of the mushroom kingdom.
So bad it was awful.
[When Rosanna Reenstreet interviewed Bob Hoskin in 2011](https://www.polygon.com/2014/4/30/5667846/bob-hoskins-dead-obituary-super-mario-bros):
> **Greenstret: What is the worst job you’ve done?**
> Hoskins: Super Mario Brothers.
> **Greenstret: What has been your biggest disappointment?**
> Hoskins: Super Mario Brothers.
> **Greenstret: If you could edit your past, what would you change?**
> Hoskins: I wouldn’t do Super Mario Brothers.
With the release of the new Mario movie I decided to go back and watch this.
Is it a bad film? Of course. Is it insanely fun? You bet your ass.
Hoskins and Leguizamo together are so clearly having a great time with it. Two absolute titans of drama and comedy wasting every bit of their talent in this dumpster fire of a film, but it works. I had a great time from start to finish, and let’s not forget Mr. Dennis Fucking Hopper giving the most ridiculous performance as a villain and the greatest ever use of the word [monkey](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_8QaWWzL3k) in all of cinema.
An abomination of a film so terrible it turns out to be glorious.
The only true Mario movie
My boyfriend made me watch this on mushrooms and I Fuckin lost it 😭😭 so ridiculous lol
“We’re Marios!”
-Luigi Mario, not his brother Mario Mario
Both not Italian, see John’s recent comments about no Latino’s being in the new movie
