Two ways to deal with the fact that your team/nation/political party fucked up. The Germans had to face it and try to make amends while teaching their youth how they fucked up. Or the Japanese version which is to deny everything and to pretend it never happened or minimize it.
My guess is the Germans were forced to deal with it face-on because the Nazis were amazing at keeping records. Hard to deny a holocaust with such copious notes, books, death camps that still are standing today as a warning, etc. I doubt any of the Imperial Japanese soldiers put pen on paper to talk about all the raping. The ones that did brag about all the murders were executed, so I guess Japan wants to see it as “well, all the bad actors in the military were all punished, so we as a nation have nothing to learn from this.”
