you can pretty much tell how iconic a flag is by how much people fly it, integrate it into clothing, other designs, etc…
California got F tier because of having writing, but the public at large are much more willing to overlook that than Grey is here, I think he’s way too dogmatic about that aspect.
Bear Flag apparel is ubiquitous, variations of the state bear are all over the place, people put the state flag up on their walls in dorm rooms and in the windows of their houses up and down the state, and our skyscrapers and downtown office blocks are often adorned with the bear flag.
It would definitely be better without the writing, but the CA flag is absolutely iconic
edit: and then he passes North Carolina, a state with words all over the flag including the state’s initials, at C tier…
I always think Ohio’s swallowtail design should rank higher on these sorts of state flag rankings. It really distinguishes it from the American flag when they’re flown together, which I think works well.
>Eight stars of gold on a field of blue –
Alaska’s flag. May it mean to you
The blue of the sea, the evening sky,
The mountain lakes, and the flow’rs nearby;
The gold of the early sourdough’s dreams,
The precious gold of the hills and streams;
The brilliant stars in the northern sky,
The “Bear,” the “Dipper,” and, shining high,
The great North Star with its steady light,
O’er land and sea a beacon bright.
Alaska’s flag to Alaskans dear,
The simple flag of a last frontier.
Utah’s new flag is awesome. For years it was an abomination and a stain in the otherwise excellent four corners flags (AZ, NM, and CO all have superb flags).
Welcome to the club, Utah. What a fan-fucking-tastic flag.
Sucks to see Minnesota at the bottom of the barrel when we have some good [redesign ideas](https://newmnflag.org/designs). If I got to pick I would chose the [L’etoile du Nord Flag by Brandon Hundt](https://newmnflag.org/designs/letoile-du-nord).
The emotions of the students is so good. But wow I never realized how many war crime level state flags there are out there
I’m sad to see CO’s C. I felt it deserves a B, but I’m partial since that’s my state.
MARYLAND REPRESENT!!!
I’m kinda sad he didn’t talk more about the history of our flag though.
I’m not even from Arizona, but it’s an S tier for me.

Grey needs to bully children in every video, he’s great at it.

Too many state flags fail at the one and only job of a flag – to be quickly identifiable from a distance and when a bit obscured by hanging limply.
“It’s one of the blue ones. With a circular state seal I can’t quite see in the center. No, that doesn’t narrow it down. At all.”
Here’s [another video](https://youtu.be/pnv5iKB2hl4) on flag design (this time focusing more on city flags) from Roman Mars that’s worth a watch.
He’s absolutely right about New York. It’s a below average design for a state that acts like so much more.
I think Alaska should get a bonus because we made [our state song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJeWLMFKwcU&t=5s) about the symbolism of the flag

MD people might riot they’re so happy…
I know everyone’s views are going to be different, but there’s one fact CGP Grey left out that I think is worth downgrading a flag for:
The [Flag of Georgia](https://cdn.britannica.com/89/889-004-15A4359F/flag-state-battle-Georgia-field-Georgias-History-2003.jpg) is way closer to the [Confederate “Stars & Bars” Flag](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c8/Flag_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America_%281861%E2%80%931863%29.svg/1920px-Flag_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America_%281861%E2%80%931863%29.svg.png) than it is to North Carolina’s or Texas’ flags. In fact, the two are identical except for the coat of arms in the corner. If copying downgrades Florida into the F range, surely Georgia deserves to be at least as low.
Why was Louisiana an F they didn’t write their name on it, that’s worth at least a D right?
Arizona should be S tier, absolutely robbed.
New Mexico for the WIN!
I had no idea we had so many that were just the seal on a dark blue background.
BATTLE BORN is awesome!
I love my home state of Indiana’s flag, but actually never noticed it said “Indiana”
There’s been a lot of desire for Maine to change ours [back to this one](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/W/IMAGERENDERING_521856-T1/images/I/51gK1Cc2etL.jpg) (edit: updated the image), which apparently is what it was until 1909 when they changed it to our [current god awful one](https://www.wabi.tv/resizer/sHLfiRiN2CAbdjVR5eihqw4l8h0=/arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-gray/public/ZYMOTA2R5VKL7NKGRL26626O3U.jpg)
I honestly see that one being flown by people far more often than our actual one
Hell yeah, Utah. I kept getting concerned when it wasn’t being named.
Utah’s new flag is awesome. For years it was an abomination and a stain in the otherwise excellent four corners flags (AZ, NM, and CO all have superb flags).
Welcome to the club, Utah. What a fan-fucking-tastic flag.
I didn’t know Utah was getting a new state flag until this video. I’m pretty hyped. Quite a bit more representative of their state.
One S.O.B. (Seal On a Bedsheet) down, many more to go.
Chicago has a better flag than Illinois
Colorado got robbed!
Colorado in C tier is criminal
