Pre dating mods and rockers, they dressed in the fashion of the Edwardian period and lasted up into the 70’s. The Stray Cats, or at least Brian Setzer, hung with them before making it big in the states.
Somebody correct that if you know better. The trivia in my brain is starting to degrade due to information overload.
Prior to clothing the Sex Pistols and selling BDSM clothes Malcom MacLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s shop on The Kings Road was called Let It Rock! and sold Ted clothing. When they switched to fetish clothes and promoted punk the Teds tried to wreck the shop.
The chap on the right seems more authentic from what I can see ( that’s not to say they’re not all Teddy Boys ) I understand ‘Teddy’ referred to the longer ‘Edwardian’ style of jacket. He seems to have the velvet collar, the longer(?) drape jacket and the crepe sole shoes or Brothel Creepers. The shoes are interesting as they look like the hi-tops or Playboys(?) favoured by Steve McQueen and still produced by Sanders in Kettering, Northamptonshire. It must have been interesting times for them. Possibly the first post World War 2 generation of youth to have their own fashion and not dressing like their Dads. I’m no expert; just cobbling some thoughts together.
I visited Let It Rock and bought a pair of Powder Blue crepe soled shoes. Wore them to my mates wedding as his best man with a double breasted brown pinstripe suit with slightly flared trousers and a rather nice tie which I think had a bird on branches motif and I had shoulder length hair. All sadly gone now. Mate moved to Australia.
There are photographs of Malcom McLaren in full teddy boy regalia. The shop was in the Worlds End at the far end of the Kings Road, Chelsea. I think Granny Takes A Trip was up there too for a time.
Quadrophenia !
