I saw Skratch Bastid at an outdoor music festival a long time ago. He was the last performer of the night and played an awesome set. Everyone was having a great time and he ended on a great track and everyone was so hyped. The MC of the festival came on stage after the last song and was yelling and hyping everyone up still.
“Let’s hear it for Skratch Bastid!” *Crowd screams*
“Do you guys want some more!?” *Crowd screams*
“I can’t hear you! Do you guys want some more Skratch Bastid!?!?” *Crowd screams*
“Well too bad! We’ve hit our noise curfew and it’s time to go home” *Crowd goes “awwwwwwww”*
Then the lights turned on and everyone left. It was a bummer, but it was fuckin hilarious and I’ll always remember it.
Love how the other Dj is just enjoying it.
I love seeing Canadian hip-hop show up randomly on reddit.
Skratch Bastid used to host a small travelling festival called Bastid’s Barbecue. He’d do his set wearing an apron and chef’s hat. I’ve seen him a few times, including at the Canadian DMCs way back when I was in high school, which was hosted by DJ Premier. Premo did a set to close out the night and my god was that a fucking incredible performance.
Skratch Bastid and Shad (who I’ve also seen a dozen times) did a really solid [EP together called The Spring Up](https://shadk.bandcamp.com/album/the-spring-up). Definitely worth a listen.
For me, it’ll never get better than the Imperial March being mashed-up with the theme from Shaft (among other things)

I know nothing about scratching or turntables. Can someone in the scene ELI5 how impressive this really is? Or is it just a “neat” gimmick?

Oh my god, what an absolute blast from the past for me. I saw this performance, maybe a total of 4-5 times on Ebaumsworld back in like 2004 or something. I’d completely forgotten about this until this post, wow.
Beat
I want to describe part of why this is so impressive. There’s the obvious stuff like “Wow he took sounds and played the Imperial March!” But arching over that is that he’s undoing the record producer’s sampling. This hits on two levels:
1. It’s flattering to the producer, in that the DJ is demonstrating his understanding/appreciation of how the producer sampled and constructed the track.
2. It’s impressive to the crowd, in that it’s not just a deconstruction of the produced track, per usual for scratch artists, but it’s also a reconstruction of the original, in real time. In other words: instead of creating something new, he’s recreating the old — which is unexpected at the meta level.
