Great to see this. Never thought he’d ever do something like this because he’s even a little reserved in some of his podcast episodes.
Needed to be like 3 parts but I’ll take this.
GOAT
The greatest cinematographer ever if you know one cinematographer.
I admit that I often get annoyed by the fact that too many people’s conception of cinematography begins and ends with him, but then I watch Fargo or The Assassination of Jesse James and I go “oh right”
I had to give up half way through Blade Runner 2049. So boring and uninteresting I couldn’t stay awake.
I could listen to this man talk for hours and hours.

I didn’t realize he shot Jarhead but thinking back now, it clearly looks like his work.
I doubt it’s his most iconic films if it includes Blade Runner 2049. This guy did Kundun, The Shawshank Redemption, tons of Coen brother films.
Wow, he’s just like a humble little genius.
The man has such a brilliant eye. I watched Empire of Light the other day and it was such a simple yet brilliantly shot movie . Then take something like Blade Runner….exceptional. His frames are like a warm bath.
I would do unspeakable things to see that 4 hour cut of Assassination of Jesse James. To me, that was the movie he deserved the award for (not to say 2049 isn’t top-tier Deakins as well).
The train robbery scene, the interrogation scene between Jesse and Ed, the narrated liminal transitioning shots, the death scene itself. Goddamn, what a fucking beautiful looking movie. It’s an Andrew Wyeth painting come to life.
Fascinating.

Roger Deakins will go down as the greatest of all time in my opinion.
