This photo clearly illustrates the desperation people had after the Crash of ’29. Brand-new, the Chrysler Model 75 started at $1,550 (a little over $27,100 today), and the owner was willing to sell it for less than 7% of that price, just so he could provide for himself and his family. The Great Depression would grip the world for the next six years.
According to my mom, it was pretty tough, though her dad was lucky. He was a supervisor for Consolidated Edison, the NY utility company, and he didn’t get laid off.
Gold was $20/oz back then, close to $2k today. So about $10,000 in today’s money.
He might still need it to suck in all the carbon monoxide he can get.
