I had a colleague who caught a few planes when smoking was permitted, he was a heavy smoker back then but also said it was one of the most disgusting experiences ever. Didn’t make him quit but said he could have a cigarette for over 24hours after getting off that plane.
I remember flying when airlines had smoking and non-smoking sections. The smoking section was in the *front* of the plane, so us non-smokers had to pass through the stench cloud to reach our seats.
When I was 13 me when my two best friends took a trip to visit another friend who had moved away. We were all in the smoking section. For some reason they wouldn’t allow people to smoke that flight (I think it was over booked or something) anyway, they went down the aisles and gave free mini bottles of liquor to placate the smokers- even to us! Best flight ever. We arrived completely hammered and our friend’s mom was more bemused than angry.
They smoked on planes into the late 80s, at least on domestic flights in Canada. I flew to Vancouver from Alberta in 1988 and the back half of the plane was the “smoking section”.
When I was a kid, it seemed like all adults smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol and coffee. I just assumed that I would, too. It was not considered rude to stub your butt out in the remaining food on your plate, nor to light up before everyone else had finished eating. Every car and every bar smelled like smoke. Every public place had ashtrays. Even having experienced it myself, it’s so long ago that we don’t really appreciate how much better it is now.
Some time in the ’80s I flew with a woman in our company to a sporting goods trade show in New Orleans. She entered a drawing at a shotgun manufacturer’s booth, and won a shotgun. I have such a fond recollection of her walking through the airport with her gun, in its brand new box, carrying it onto the plane and putting it in the overhead compartment. Nobody ever looked twice at her.
Smoking isnt cool
These two were 21 going on spring break. Don’t smoke, kids.
Her teeth look smoker yellow super cool
Few cocktails already down the hatch
But they’re doing it in the “smoking section”.

Those seats look a hundred times more comfortable than the seats of today
Ah… when smoking still was healthy!

I’m so glad smoking is banned in most public spaces now.
Smoking isn’t cool, it’s disgusting. Most smokers agree, methinks.
And dressed nicely. I’ll bet they both have shoes on.

Yep. Smokers in the front so the smoke blew back. Bad idea but smokers ruled in those days.
Woah, look at that leg room!
This, and I remember when smoking in hospitals was allowed.
Glad thats banned now
Planes used to stink a lot! They are more pleasant now.
Ahh, back when we thought nothing of stinking up everyone else’s breathing air.

And yet the world was a much healthier place back then

Kids today will never know how awful the past smelled. (Thankfully)
Sam Giancana vibes here
When I flew to Hawaii in the 80’s, the back of the plane was considered the smoking section. WTF?
They’re also 35.

There was usually a non-smoking section, where all of the cigarette smoke accumulated.

How is this cool?
I’d have had the worst migraine sitting in a container of cigarette smoke for hours. Thank goodness they have changed this.
