He volunteered the day after Pearl Harbor. 19yrs. Old. Went with the First 350 men to take Guadalcanal. Carried a radio out the door of the L.C., went under water, witch destroyed the radio. His buddy helped him up , they both made it . He became a runner (no radio) and relayed coordinates. Hit by shrapnel witch knocked his front teeth out, he remembers having to be told he was hit . An hour later, it was over, the island surrendered, and the flag was being raised on the hill, now forever recognized in bronze. He refused the purple heart from his wounds. Made Staff Srgt. and taught some Navajo Morse code.
