My vote goes to Michael Jackson for best overall halftime performance, but Prince is definitely up there. Both performers that can singlehandedly command an entire audience with their stage presence.
We were talking about this during Rihanna’s half-time performance! I know she’s pregnant, but that was a serious lack of energy throughout the whole set.
Nothing’s ever going to top Prince performing Purple Rain in a downpour. Say what you want about his personality, but the dude knew how to put on a show.
I don’t like prince. Supposedly weird Al was supposed to sit next to him at an awards ceremony or something and he made a big deal about it. Also princess lawyers I think told al not to make eye contact with him LMAO
Yeah, I just don’t get it. This is not my kind of music in general, but I don’t see how this is _that_ special?! What the hell is this guy at 3:53 talking about? Surprising? Spontaneous? No script? Loose? Are we watching the same show? This is the most choreographed performance ever. Every movement by everyone on stage is pre-planned and rehearsed a thousand times. The only random thing that happened is the rain during “Purple Rain”, which nobody could control or predict.
EDIT: Yes, be good fanboys and downvote an opinion. Calling a superbowl performance spontaneous is the wildest thing I have heard all week. This is the largest, fakest, most planned and rehearsed event on the planet.
In 40 years, it had never once rained during a Super Bowl.
“The morning of the game, I opened the curtains of my hotel room,” recalled Bruce Rodgers, production designer for the NFL halftime show, describing the events of that day in 2007: “It was like a scene from Moby Dick.”
The relentless downpour was terrible news for a production crew responsible for delivering a flawless live outdoor performance of epic proportions, not to mention four separate live electric guitars for the King of Paisley Park himself- the legendary performer, virtuoso guitarist, and prodigious songwriter, Prince.
“Put me on the phone with Prince,” said television and live event producer Don Mischer, rallying his production team later that stormy morning.
“Now, I want you know that it’s raining,” Mischer told Prince on the phone.
“Yes, it’s raining,” answered the performer.
“And are you okay?” Mischer wanted to know.
The Purple One, the artist formerly and forever to be known as Prince, had only one question:
Bro….it rained while Prince sang Purple Rain…you can’t get more perfect than that. That has got to be probably the best live performance ever in my opinion. Period.

That halftime set was so much better than all the others combined.
I watch this every Super Bowl Sunday. Dude was an absolute legend. Also a jerk. But also a legend.
How did the rain not kill all the equipment? The mics, the guitars, the lights. Serious question.
Yes, no question. Never to be surpassed.
I underestimated Prince for so long. This is one one of the best sets I’ve ever seen.

Never forget

My favorite part is when he plays his giant 40′ shadow cock on the curtain
I remember my dad calling me over to watch a replay of this set on the DVR. He got a huge kick out of the sheer audacity of that shadow projection.
Easiest GOAT question of all time
He was such an absolute fucking boss.
Absolutely 100% the greatest Super Bowl halftime show of all time… and very closely followed by last years’ show with all the old-school rap peeps.
STOP TALKING OVER THE MUSIC!!
By FAR the best ever.
Is there a video of this performance anywhere without all the talking heads interrupting?
Best Superbowl halftime show ever! Fight me. Lol
This is legitimately the only time it ever felt like a show and not just a big budget spectacle wedged in between to halves of something else.
Prince was a force of nature.
I will always watch this. Every time it comes up, I click it.

here’s the [full show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WYYlRArn3g) that seemingly never gets posted
Lady Gaga, Madonna, Katy Perry, Beyonce and Shakira/J.lo were all better.

Remember that one time that the Superbowl opened for Prince?
I’ve never got Prince, all his music sounds kind of generic…

Rihana’s performance was absolute ass compared to this
