I think there was a lot of coke involved in the executive decision to pair Eddie Murphy and Rick James together in this….monstrosity. It was terrible when it came out. And I think I got musical PTSD hearing it again.
What is the main problem of this song? If you slow it down to half time it will become a moody ballad. It is not a happy melody that evokes the ideas of partying, it is so sad that it is sarcastic party call.. Kind of like someone whose heart is broken but insist that they should party that sadness away.
Killer fact! This song, recorded to win a $100,000 bet with Richard Pryor who said Eddie couldn’t sing, was voted #7 in VH-1’s list of the “Top 50 Worst Songs Of All Time”.
There exists a version of this song where some of his comedy bits are mixed into the brushes & breaks and it’s GREAT!!
“Scary movies are always ridiculous! People going ‘Aww baby! This house is beautiful & spacious & perfect!’ <disembodied voice> ‘Get Out!!’
‘To bad we can’t stay!!’ “
Fuck your couch

What an absolute classic. Legendary banger.
It’s really not that bad of a song
Everybody trashing this should know this cheesy song was #2 on “US Billboard Hot 100”
Pretty sure Eddy was a teetotaler for the most part. Pretty sure he never really drank much.
It’s a helluva drug, cocaine.
This song is a banger and always has been.

DIAMONDS ON YA FINGAZ
I’m always surprised that this was when Eddie Murphy was massive – SNL, Beverly Hills Cop, this song, and he was only 23 at the time.
