I’m regularly floored by the ages of military personnel in historical photos. Nineteen. Think about what you were worrying about at 19 because this guy was worried about the fucking Vietcong.
I think those are Moonpies in the Vietnam picture which were the cream pies of the time. The guy was a private so he was getting shot at for about $200 a month plus overseas and combat pay. Of course there was “free room and board”
I feel for our Vietnam vets. Every bit as brave and sacrificing as our WWII vets. They just fought, through no fault of their own, a far less popular, meaningful and necessary war.
I guess the LBE never really changes. I used cassette cases to keep the ammo pouches square for inspection. Had a spare set just for inspection. An entire spare set of TA-50 was a must have for a peace time soldier. Once you got that sleeping bag rolled perfect it was worth it to never unroll it again.
My dad served in Vietnam and had a thing for those Little Debbie’s OCP’s. Is there something I’m missing about people that served there and those pies?

Went from Andrew Garfield to Bill Murray.
This is one of those Reddit posts that I’m soooooo tired of seeing

But can he kill a box of oatmeal creme pies as fast as he can kill a Vietnamese child?
So he was Andrew Garfield and now he’s Richard Dreyfus

Old man must have some war crimes under that belly. *Caugh My Lai caugh*!
If he can fit in the same uniform now as he did when he was twenty – well done ! I couldn’t even fit in the same helmet.
is it the same uniform?
I too loooooove just putting on my old war crime suit and remember it fondly
Little Debbie! a warfighter’s sweet friend
I love the snack cake substitute for the cigarettes. I bet he’d be interesting to talk to
Kudos. Double kudos if he was able to fit into same fatigues (and looks that way)
Is good that he can still smile…
He did not change much
Still badass years later.

Moon-pie … What a time to be alive.
Come to my hometown, and fear the trees 🙂
Repost.
I see a 4th Division patch on his left shoulder. Me too. Nam 1968.
Still slim and in fighting condition.
Awesome that he could still fit into his BDU, dad had to reorder his several times.

Glad he made it home!
Love the joint, he’s gotta be loving today’s weed.
Reminds me of the song “19” by Paul Hardcastle, released in 1985.
I feel for Vietnam War vets; especially now since they are fading away.
