I love how he mentions there are still places today that use this system and you imagine some poor or 3rd world country or something. Nah, it’s America of course.
I remember in an older episode of QI (Stephen Fry was still hosting) they said that about 7% of facts they say on the show are proven wrong within a year. And if I remember correctly they said that more than 50% of the facts from the 1st series were wrong
Horrible Histories also had a sketch about how Pirates would give each other the Black Spot to mark them for death. The Black Spot was invented by Robert Louis Stevenson for Treasure Island.
This is how you do an apology video: admit what you did wrong, explain why you were wrong, provide the correct info, and go through how you’ll avoid mistakes in the future. I trust Tom Scott more now than I did before (not that I didn’t before) because of how open he is here.
So why is it so hard for politicians and CEOs to understand this is the right way to handle this?
I genuinely did not care about this at all, until that host completely sucked me in with his excellent presentation and brilliant curiosity. 5/7. Would recommend.
Naaaaaaa, I still believe the talking rat with the sign.
This guy is so immensely watchable.
Wondering, what was the actual purpose of a “fire insurance” than? Like why would people buy that?

Tom Scott videos are always great. I like that he still cares about his older videos and respects the audience.
One of the best content creators on YouTube.

This apology brought to you by NORDVPN.
I’m curious as to who made the change to the London Fire Brigade page, and what the story behind that edit was.
“Anyone who says they’re certain about how the world works is either a mathematician or selling something.” -Dread Pirate Scott
“I was wrong about firefighters in 18th century London letting uninsured building burn (And so were many others)”
Fixed the title for you.

I’m gonna miss Tom. Even when he’s wrong he’s informative and delightful

Tom’s line at the end reminded me of this quote.
I’m just glad he finally made a video that didn’t do the stupid ‘point an arrow at clickbaity text’ thing that the algorithm likes for some reason.
I used this fact as a storyline in my DnD campaign that involved a rivalry between fire departments.
You just empowered a whole series of “Um actuallies” that are about to come my way.
This is Tom’s version of CGP Grey’s Staten Island video

The clickbait title is stupid and makes me not want to watch out of spite.
