It started out really strong but I was underwhelmed by the second half. Felt like story became really lame by the end. They showed all the good parts in the trailer itself.
How spoilery is this? Feel like it’s worth checking for Dunky reviews.
*Edit: I just watched it. For others wondering, I don’t think it was too bad. I’m about 10 hours into the game.
They put Bear McCreary in the game. That has to be a first for any composer. Like he got lines and everything. Also, Odin has a better theme than any of the new Star Wars villians. The minute he come son the screen, Bear’s like “you like the Emperor theme, how about Big Papa Odin music.”
Have you tried pushing the play button? You can push the play button to watch the video. See the red button? Have you considered pushing it? What if you pushed the button to watch the video?
I think it’s a very good video game and the production values are off the charts. There’s some awesome stuff in it but I felt like the narrative was really suffering compared to the 2018 one. It felt like after the credits rolled, there was a whole new game in post-game content that as I kept fighting crazy shit one after another, I was like, “Man, I wish the whole game was like this”
Finding it thoroughly enjoyable on “No Mercy”. A think the only thing it’ll be lacking for me is an end game after doing a full complete. It would be epic if they added an endgame similar to Ghost of Tsushima.
Very amazing sequel to the 2018 one. One of the best continuation of quality in games I’ve played, BUT it is far too long for my liking and there are in my humble opinion, WAY too many mechanics in the gameplay. There are far too many little elements of equipment collecting. I capped out at home much there were in the first one. Two armor categories, weapon design and rune, and a gem is probably the most categories that I can handle. And maybe a slot or two for your companion.
It just becomes too much to organize and think about. I was picking up items for slots I completely forgot existed. I’ll finish it, but as whole product, I think 2018 will be a better installment for my tastes.
The entire last section of the story was terrible and ruined the last 2 games story IMO. Just one small event (in the scope of things) made the characters do a 180 from what they were doing the whole game. Then everything felt super rushed and illogical. I can’t say more without spoilers and idk how to do spoilers on mobile, but it felt like they ran out of time to make sense of the character mindset changes and decisions. Also the game suffered hard from being on PS4 too – the map design was awful. Linear (which itself is fine) but the loading screens disgusted as cracks in mountains, holes, tunnels, rocks to climb under, ect ect… It was bad in 2018 but it’s far worse in this game. It’s a shame they designed it around PS4’s limitations.
I beat the game about a week ago. it took me a bit to digest the game, but in order to really explain my thoughts I have to spoil so spoiler’s tag here we go.

>!Okay, so basically, the game is a 8.5/10 or 9.0/10 for me, pretty much because of how they handled a central twist in the game. In the leadup to the final act of Ragnarok, it is revealed that Tyr that we have in Sindri’s house, is actually Odin in Disguise. He makes a play for his mask but ends up killing Brok in a scuffle. With Brok Killed, it’s a short romp to Surtur to create Ragnarok the monster and initiate the final act of the game. !<
>!All throughout the game there were moments which I felt were a tad strange that only made sense after you get through the game. Like how Thor pours mead, but he, Kratos, nor Atreus take a drink. It’s later learned that Thor is intentionally going dry and Kratos and Atreus don’t want to accept.!<
>!In retrospect, it’s also obvious that the plot’s been kind of dancing around the central twist the whole time. The way Kratos and Atreus come to the conclusion of where Tyr is was so weak to have the game give you ‘Tyr’ so early on was kind of silly, but it was all to set up the gotcha it was gonna do.!<
>!Though this kind of becomes a problem however because the story and characters kind of become distorted because they have to always account for this twist. LIke, after Atreus goes to Ironwood he discovers the Giant’s last ace in the hole, in that they aren’t actually dead, Odin, and Asgard will fall but Kratos will die… it’s an important storybeat at a macro-level that has HUGE knock-on effects for Loki’s destiny and the motivations of the group.!<
>!However, when Loki is brought back from Ironwood to Midgard we learn that Atreus just up and disappeared for two days and is promptly brought back to Sindri’s house where Kratos confronts him with understandable concern… this is where I think a critical distortion of the characters and story occured because the story understand’s that Tyr is Odin, but you the player do not know that yet. Atreus just learned that his father is to die in prophency and Kratos is just coming off the heels of showing very real concern and asking a very realistic question about did he go to Asgard… !<
>!My intuition of Atreus as a character is that even though he promised to not reveal Ironwood. With his father he wouldn’t break that promise, but he would ‘bend’ that promise. Telling his dad that he sincerely didn’t go to Asgard but where he did go was hugely important and he made a promise not to tell… but importantly hinting to Kratos that he’s trying to stop a terrible future and the last hope of the giants.!<
>!as a side note, it felt a little contrived to me that Atreus and Kratos wouldn’t talk about the fact that Kratos is ‘fated’ to die. Atreus’ agnst didn’t come off as genuine or called for in general.!<
>!However my intuition was mistaken, this isn’t what Atreus did, in the face of Kratos being understandably upset, Atreus starts to fly off the handle and accuses his father of the fact that he does not trust him.. which didn’t sit right with me because I thought as soon as Atreus went to the mystic gateway Kratos had grasped him in his arms and insisted ‘Still I follow!’ like – the plot just seemed to completely ignored the fact that Kratos IS being earnest right now in the trust of his son.!<
>!This felt odd to me at first, but when taken in context of the Tyr/Odin Twist it felt like the story was forcing Kratos and Atreus into a manufactured drama simply because it would be easier for the rest of the story to play out. Tyr/Odin would never get a chance to sniff out Ironwood and the Soul Marbles and truly threaten the giants. by my understanding of Kratos, Atreus, and Odin as characters. Atreus would trust his Father in alluding to Ironwood, Tyr/Odin should have been able to tease out that info not from Kratos, but from Loki. Upon learning of the Giant’s last refuge Odin would do everything within his power to get into Ironwood, and complete his Genocide once and for all. THAT, in addition to perhaps Brok dying as well, is ultimately a much stronger reason to kick off ragnarok, for Surtur to get involved, and for Kratos to truly become the general. Ragnarok is not the end of everything but the final pitched battle between the Giant’s and Odin – who had an opportunity to be better and back off the giants but just can’t leave well enough alone – As well as Kratos becoming the general to preserve a culture and race from dying.!<
>!So overall, that’s why I knock off a point for the game. The story is one of it’s highlights but – at least from my perspective – that Odin/Tyr twist is mishandled and the story contorts it’s characters to accomodate it instead of truly working with it.!<
holy crap this game is boring as hell outside of 3 or 4 amazing parts. Puzzle, trash mob, puzzle, trash mob, re-colored mini boss. holy hell man, just as bad as 2018.
I am 52 hours in, and still playing. There’s content to play specifically for after the ending of the main story. It’s so damn good.
GOTy DAMN

Freya stole the show with her acting in several scenes
inb4 people get mad at dunkey for liking a game
ProZD as the squirrel was a great choice
Its a shame I’m gonna have to wait like 2 years to play this on PC.
Currently.playinh through god of war 2018 atm and now I’ve gotten past the unfair bullshit hump and finally upgraded my gear the game is fun again.
Nope. Definitely not gonna do this to myself.
I know the faults of the game, don’t need it being shit on any more lol.
This guy is such a tool.

Babe wake up, my opinion just dropped

Can I play this game without finishing the last one?
Game is good. Combat is better thane 2018 and better bosses the story is weaker. Very slow to start and then it feels like it rushes the epic stuff.
This game is so fucking good other than the combat, which is only pretty good.

Meh. Expected a more epic end to the video it just sounded really like he was trying hard to be profound
Otherwise good video for a solid series

I see no one talking about Ryan Hurst as Thor.
I loved his performance in SoA, and really dug into what he brought to the character here.
Exciting. Then I remember I don’t have a PS5. =/
Are there spoilers for the game in the video? I just met the young girl in the forest, for reference
I think he liked it.
holy crap this game is boring as hell outside of 3 or 4 amazing parts. Puzzle, trash mob, puzzle, trash mob, re-colored mini boss. holy hell man, just as bad as 2018.
The scene where you meet Thor is probably one of my favorite moments in gaming. It’s so fucking cool
Does he spoil the story in this review like he does in a lot of his other ones? Ruined the final bosses of Elden Ring for me
Is this coming out for PC?
Didn’t even mention the puzzle hints, which everyone else has been telling me are too much.
This looks like more of the same. Pass.
