I always “thought” I understood how these were made. But seeing it like this is amazing. Is the full version of this someplace, or know what its called?
For anyone that loves the film I HIGHLY recommend the manga. It gives much more characterization to Tetsuo and the story is almost completely different.
Awesome
This is awesome. I rented Akira from my local video store when I was a kid in the early 90s not understanding what I was about to watch. It just looked like a really cool cartoon. Absolutely blew my mind. I was stunned the entire time. Good times.
That’s next level. Thanks for sharing
Tetsuo!!!
Watched this for the first time during my first trip
This is truly a craft I am missing more and more as Studios are preferring computer animated these days..
The handcraft truly added more soul to the scenes
One guy was wearing earbuds, I didn’t know they had those back then.
Man it must have took an eternity to finish that shit up. Truly fascinating
I’m not a big anime fan but this movie really blew me away. I’d be happy for other suggestions. (Also enjoyed cowboy bebop)
Where can we find the full length
If you don’t know what this is you’re missing a masterpiece
“Take a look at the finished product — doesn’t it look real?”
Um, no. It looks great, but it certainly doesn’t look real. It’s not like I watched Akira and thought “I bet this is live action”.
The backgrounds in this movie are drop dead gorgeous.
I have been thinking to buy Akira. Is it worth the money, or is it just old and boring ?
I have a cel with matching production drawing from this movie. I got it years ago at a convention.
I was just thinking about Akira this morning… I haven’t seen that movie in a long while and apparently it isn’t streaming anywhere I can watch it (It is on Hulu but I’m not subscribing to that service). And all DVD and Blu Rays I can find are not in region 1.
As an 80’s child I got to say, I have no clue what the hell this movie is. Lol.
Holy shit…I can’t imagine how much time and effort put into this movie..
This animated movie was also the first to do something totally different from all other animated films created back then. They recorded the voice actors performance first, the actors were being directed as they read the script, like a play, capturing they’re expressions, and emotions, then the animators got to work drawing the lip movements and facial expressions to match what was recorded.
I confess as a fan of anime raised on these hand drawn marvels and works of art into the terrible, terrible culture destroying CGI of the 2000s…. CGI is now very well into being an art form in of itself.
Granted it doesn’t have the physical merit that an exhibition of the traditional anime would (how much would one of those Akira scenes be worth!?) but it’s come along if not near enough all the way.
TLDR: There are now CGI based anime releases that I’d like to collect on blueray.
I have many hand-drawn production cels and several original production backgrounds from old-school anime. El-Hazard, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2, Vampire Princess Miyu and a few others. I have a few western production cels from The Secret of NIMH and the 90’s X-Men. They are wonderful, amazing pieces of art and I am incredibly glad that I have them. The backgrounds are amazing watercolors and I don’t know if you’ve ever tried painting on acetate, but I’ve found it to be very difficult. Thanks for sharing this glimpse at the hard work that went into creating this classic. My husband had it on laserdisc back in the day and was super excited to share it with me when we first started dating.
