I know absolutely NOTHING about cars and honestly couldn’t care less about them but I listened to these guys all the time.
The only good part about working weekends at one of my old jobs was that I got to catch their show on my way into work.
These guys were the best. Seriously…radio legends.
The story of how they got the show is great. IIRC A local auto parts dealer sponsored an afternoon round table discussion about car parts that would feature local mechanics answering questions as a publicity stunt. Only one guy showed up. Since nobody else came he called his brother to come down too.
People kept writing into the radio station after that asking when the two funny brothers who talk about cars were going to be on again. The rest is history.
Alright, I’ll do it. Not the 80’s. That car is a first gen Miata, which didn’t come to the US until May of ’89. Furthermore, it’s got a passenger airbag which didn’t happen until ’94.
I got into this show very late in it’s life, like, about 4 months worth left of new episodes in 2012. It was such a homely like show to listen to and these guys were very entertaining.
Then like 2 years after the show have had it’s run, Tom passes away. Such a shame, really.
I remember listening to this show with my father all the time while growing up. It’s definitely shaped my sense of humor, for better or worse. Now that my father died it nice to listen to the old episodes and think of us together. Im hoping in a few years my son and I can enjoy it together as well.
Anyone else remember “Andy’s Law?” It was the law that states that it is indeed possible for two people who don’t know what they’re talking about to know EVEN LESS than only one person who doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Miss this show so much!
Loved that show.
highly recommended listening, if you like gearheads with wisecracks, these two are well worth your time.
I miss their show quite a lot.
Miss these guys.
*Dave from Bemidji enters the chat.*
I still listen to the podcasts. They are 30 year old rebroadcasts. Still funny They drop twice a week.
Seems like things started to go downhill right around the time these guys left the air. Coincidence?
I miss their show. I think I learned a solid 80% of what I know about cars from them.
The most infectious laughs I’ve ever heard.
Looks like Cheech and Chong before their pot days.
Don’t drive like my brutha.
Don’t drive like MY brutha.
“Wahlcome tah Cah Tahlk”
We’re here to tawk about cahs, cah repair, and of course, the ansah to last week’s puzzlah
I’ve never seen a picture of these two before but somehow I knew what they looked like with uncanny accuracy
A staple in my house.
This was always on when I was a kid. My dad would try to diagnose the callers car trouble before Click and Clack would.
This picture is from the Archive Tower on Car Talk Plaza, Cambridge “our fair city” MA

“Ya bring in your car I have to make a boat payment!”
Their voices are the sounds of long road trips from the 80s and 90s…

Edit: I do miss these guys.
I love Cheech and Chong
Are they like Cheech and Chong lite?
Car Talk is the best radio show there ever was
They were also in Cars. They played Rusty and Dusty Rust-eze
Loved listening to them on the weekends!
Greta guys.
Extremely knowledgeable.
Don’t drive like my brudder!
RIP Tom.
Director of Cushion Testing: Mike Easter
They warned us about the bozone layer . .
…and our lawyers, Dewy, Cheatem, and Howe.
I learned how to adjust my side mirrors from them!
Love and miss this show.

A lot of people who love them don’t know shit about cars or don’t even care about cars. They just put on a great show.
Miss them
Where was this broadcast?
I love their helpers. Like their Russian drivers; “Peekup & Dropov”.
Color of the car often revealed the answer!
We’ll be back with the third half of today’s show after a word from your local NPR station.
I still listen to them on my podcasts . Love them still

God I miss these guys. NPR decided to rebroadcast all of their shows in a new CarTalk podcast. You can get it on NPR One
