In 1993, Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson turn a performance of “Bottom Live” that went off the rails into a moment of comic genius that is still insanely funny 30 years later.

  • I know that the cock-ups and the moments of breaking the 4th wall were kind of part of the expectations with this play- but they really went afield here. I do wish we still had Rik Mayall with us.

  • I watched this live. Well not this particular performance but I went to the theatre to see them do this (in a different city) and it was great. The two of them together were hilarious and I was genuinely saddened when Mayall died. If there is anyone out there that hasn’t watched the tv series Bottom, you should.

The bit that stands out for me is when Richie goes down the stairs in his wheelchair and breaks both of his legs so they’re facing the wrong way. Even 30 yrs later that makes me laugh just thinking about it but I cried laughing the first time I saw it.

  • “Wanna give me the feedline again in front of all your friends?”

I can’t watch this scene without getting emotional, it was by far the funniest thing Rik and Ade ever did together and then that bastard Rik had to go and die on us. I’m not convinced this wasn’t at least partially scripted, but I don’t care it had me in tears of laughter.

If you’ve never seen either of them, Bottom is a good entry point, and you can watch Bottom Live once you’ve seen a few episodes and understand all of the little in-jokes. The Young Ones is hilarious too but it tends to go over the heads of people who didn’t grow up in 1980s Britain.

  • This will forever be one of the funniest live performances I have ever watched. I was so young back then and the immaturity hit on point. I’m immature and love this!
