I saw the original 1930 movie when I was in college, and it depressed me for weeks. Do I really want to go through that again? Just this scene was horrific.
This scene was so stupid. The Germans would not just dumbly fire their rifles at tanks. They had tanks too. They knew what they were. That’s why they also knew to disable the tracks with grenades.
This movie is getting way to easy a pass because of it’s subject matter. It deviated wildly from the book and just was not that good. Plenty of other movies have done “the horrors of war” better.
Movie is excellent. Incredibly well paced, shot and edited. The acting is excellent. What really put it over the top for me was the soundtrack. Created an emotional tension throughout the film. It’s truly an “anti-war” film. Brutal, horrifying and sad.
No, just no. This is an incredibly stupid, Hollywood scene.
The number of tanks, and their disciplined formation looks like shit out of the Gulf War, not WWI. The coordination between tanks is laughable. Large tank assaults did happen, but that was later and there wouldn’t be awestruck confusion at what they were fighting. Plus, highly-effective anti-tank rifles were adopted and deployed quickly. The tactics are complete shit. Why is their infrantary dozens or hundreds of yards behind the tanks?
Also, just love how the barbed-wire is so conveniently out of the way in completely useless spots to improve the cinematography.
The ONLY thing that pulled me out of really immersing myself in the story was when the characters shot rifles. They just had no weight. No recoil. If they worked on making the shooting look more real (perhaps blanks or something similar), it would have been 10/10. Without the visual recoil of a ‘real bullet being fired’, it just made me think of airsoft and not the brutal story this movie was telling.
But besides this, the movie honors the great book. Really well made.
Required reading High School – we all fell asleep during the showing of the black and white movie. I wish we could have seen this in History class instead!
I’ve watched the two other “All Quiet on the Western Front” couple days ago in preparation for this one. It was nice to see the similar story beats but a different take to them. It was refreshing. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I did watch it in German with subs.
Now tanks are worthless, javelins do the job
Tanks for sharing that . . . . .

Those were real props. Not CGI. Fantastic film-making.
It is hard to wrap my head around the scale of death and suffering in World War I. If we can do this to each other, any evil is possible.

0/10
Soldiers don’t shoot normal rifles at tanks.

A little bit more than hundred years latter nothing from the reasons for that war matters. What a sad waste of life and resources.
Just watched this last night, great movie.

Hollywood schlock through and through.
Too overly dramatic for me. Doesn’t do honor to the original at all. Hollywood please stop.
Incredible movie.

Edit: seems people don’t like mild criticism
Dude stabbing himself to death with the fork fucked me up
The book is incredible. They also try to ban the book in the past because you know…
Jesus..
Isn`t those, kinda, german type of tanks? Sturmpanzerwagen A7V look alike.

Scroll down if you want to see insane nitpicking on a great war movie.
that was paced terribly.
Love the movie.
Incredible movie.
I really need to watch this. Also this would be a good movie to show in schools after army recruiters show up. Just to give some real context
Lots of war movies show the ugly side but have the main point being valour, courage patriotism etc. This movie was just sheer terror and brutality.

What’s with that dissolve at :15-:16? Seems out of place.
Odd how they don’t show them shooting the French soldiers coming out of the immobilised tank. In the film that bit was a few seconds longer
