Anthony Bourdain on maids and laundry
No one can call people out right to their faces quite like Anthony Bourdain. pic.twitter.com/q7uDHxHiNC

Bourdain: …I’m just fucking with you.
*(voiceover)* Ron Howard: He wasn’t.
Absolutely legendary human.
What a treasure he was.
Tony: You’re living off the labour of a repressed underclass
Them: 👁️👄👁️
You can tell they haven’t even given a thought in their lives to how privileged they are
The entire restaurant industry works because of a repressed, underpaid, often illegal underclass operating with completely different wage laws.
I love love the comment that “everyone has maids.” It completely ignores the maids themselves, and probably a whole underclass who do not fit into this person’s perception of “everyone.”
After decades of having to use pay to use laundry machines I finally got my own washer/dryer in my place and I gotta say I like doing laundry now.
I hate ironing/folding though.
“Maids are the opiate of the masses.”
Maids are the masses you dumb privileged fuck.
I even feel bad paying a woman to come clean a few rooms in our house once in a while.
He highlights the struggles of these “maids” who often have to leave their families behind in order to provide for them. In the episode where he goes to Manila, he reads a heartfelt letter written by one of his producers addressed to his Filipino nanny. In the letter he thanks her for raising him to be the man that he is while sacrificing years with her own children. I believe these experiences is what made Bourdain detest the life of privilege including his own. RIP kind sir. I enjoyed seeing the world through your compassionate eyes.
Edit: Added the link, that segment about OFWs (overseas foreign workers) starts at 33:00. https://youtu.be/ZroEePqEAwQ

“Anthony in fact, wasn’t joking.”
I have a female friend in Singapore with a maid and her maid went back to Malaysia for a month to see family, my friend didn’t know how to use the washing machine, basic house chores were like this huge obstacle she didn’t know how to do or take hours to complete. As a guy from the UK I can’t comprehend it
What show was this from?
Western elites love to talk about how great Singapore is and totally ignore the fact that the city runs on dormitories full of desperate migrant labour.
I miss Tony. I meet him in New York during fleet week and we talked for hours. He was a cool dude. I had invited him to my home down in Texas for homemade Cajun and Tex-mex cooking with me and my family, but he died shortly after.
Surprising views from a society that houses their maids in window-less bomb shelters the size of a walk-in-closet. Haha
Singaporeans are respected by the size of the bank account and how porcelain your skin is.
I remember when I started working and started talking to a bunch of coworkers from the Philippines.
I remember telling them that I grew up super poor in America and they would tell me that they grew up poor in the Philippines and then they would proceed to talk about their maids back home. When I asked them how can they be poor if they can afford a maid? and they would laugh and tell me that everyone have maids over there.
I later found out that all my Filipino coworkers/friends graduated from basically the top college in the Philippines and were all relatively well off. Like their family was rich enough to go vacation in America every other year and still claimed to be poor lol.
It’s kinda funny because now that I think about it, they’re actually more “American” than I am even though I was born in America. Like they know American pop culture/TV shows/Movies much better than me since I grew up without cable TV, never went to a movie theater until I started working, etc. They’ve actually been to more places in America than me since my family was never rich enough to go on family vacations when I was a kid.
I’m just fucking with you. Smiles. But also I’m not.
Wow those people sound beyond insufferable.
I love that the maids don’t count as “women in Singapore”
Here’s a mirror (or maybe [the original](https://youtu.be/FoPbOgIVsJs?t=1001)). I just find OP’s linked video has very low audio volume.
Anthony knew how to read a room and never stray into unpleasantness
They’re so flippant and clearly vacuous. People like that creep me out
There’s a special place in hell for people who point cameras at screens.
Singaporeans pick maids like they’re picking dog breeds:

My girlfriend works at a college. One of the student workers from Zimbabwe said something about it “being wierd that people don’t have maids in the US. Everyone in Zimbabwe has a maid.”
“Everyone has a maid? Do you think the maids have maids? If so does their maid have one? How many maids do you think there are?”
It’s just funny how easily people get stuck in their bubble.
