Hi, Mom & Chinese Nostalgia | Video Essay

  • It’s interesting someone mentioned in the comment section that the original Chinese movie title actually translates to ”Hi, Li Huan Ying” which is the full name of the character’s mother. This gives a nice glimpse into what the story is about. Her daughter meeting her mother through the lens of friendship and discovering the woman that she was before she became a mother.

  • Haven’t watched the video yet but I’ve been meaning to watch this movie. I first heard about it when looking up box office numbers for last year. It was the highest grossing movie of the year for a while.

It was kind of insane to see considering you wouldn’t expect a light feel good comedy to be one of the biggest releases of the year.

And a few months after that it was another Chinese film, set during WW2 I think? Definitely a war movie. That was less surprising in terms of genre but still crazy to think that some of the highest grossing movies are Chinese films you never hear about.

Edit: I also could be completely off base but in terms of foreign crowd pleasing movies the tone makes me think of Miss Granny or something.
