Some high school friends and I were playing Star Wars Masters of Teras Kasi in an after school gaming club in the late 90s. Whenever a Han vs Leia fight came up, somebody would inevitably make a spousal abuse joke.
BTW that’s ’90s for future reference.

I mean, edginess is cool or whatever until you get some random developer telling you he’s going to ‘make you his bitch and to suck it down’. Then it’s just cringe.
I clipped out an ad from PSM (unofficial PlayStation magazine) for one of the time crisis games. Text was “will you start crying when the bullets start flying?” With a teen curled up in the fetal position crying.
Definitely wouldn’t fly these days
I experienced this first hand. Played tekken with my mom when I was a little. I never stood a chance. Recently we played Soul Calibur 6 and even tho she never played it before and I had the clear upperhand, i only won by one round and it was hard fought victory.

There used to be a charity ad here in the UK that was running a campaign against physical abuse of kids by their families.
I’ll call the kid here Bob, because Bob. It went like this:

The first time I saw it my partner and I were in genuine danger of choking through laughing so uncontrollably. Like… please don’t get me wrong, it’s a horrible blight on the lives of many children, but the guy’s turbo-charged delivery of the line was just that amazing. It was so outrageous that even now we can’t name a single fucking noun without then going “A FIST!” immediately after. It’s been more than a decade ffs.
I see man there’s got a 32X. I maintain that was an underrated and unfairly maligned console. Or ‘console’. Or **FIST.**
It was a joke but it was also a response to the ridiculous thought that playing video games made you violent.
Playing video games does not automatically make you violent if you are a normal sane person.
