One of those extinct moments
Edit: I guess not so extinct, which is cool
Did the pilot ask if you like movies about gladiators?
Cool moment for a kid when the plane is not moving but there’s a reason this should be prohibited in flight or taxi regardless of 9/11:
[Aeroflot Flight 593](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeroflot_Flight_593)
Boeing 727. Lucky you
Hell yeah! Boeing 727, one of my favorite planes!
I flew to Disney about 2 months after 9/11 and the pilots let me do this too! I was 7 and scared of flying in a plane for the first time. I always thought they let me do this because they were trying to make me feel better but maybe this was a common practice?
Surprisingly, they still let you do this. We were on a Delta flight a couple of weeks ago and the pilot invited me and my young son into the cockpit. The pilot actually got out of his seat and let us both sit down. They also gave us a pilot trading card lol. This was before the doors shut while we boarding FYI, definitely not during the flight.
Was this on the ground or in-flight? Any time I see a kid posing in a cockpit I think of [Aeroflot 593](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeroflot_Flight_593) where the captain let his kid sit in the seat in-flight and he moved something. Whole plane went down.
Mickey did 9/11
Three weeks before 9/11 I was at Luke AFB flying an F16 flight simulator. I’m probably the last kid that got to do that.
This still happens after 9/11. The cockpit door is open during boarding. My son went into the cockpit once maybe 10 years ago.
Why is it important to mention 9/11 ?
I have one of these as well haha. Crazy we used to be so innocent.
Was this while you all were flying??
I know a Russian jet crashed due to the pilot letting his kid sit in the seat while they were flying and hit hit something and it crashed killing everyone.
It’s also hard to describe how much stuff changed after 9/11 to people who weren’t born yet.
Did you suck his cock
Pre 9/11 flying. Man I miss it
To anyone reading this, please feel free to come up at the end of the flight and say hi if you like, regardless of age! The worst thing a pilot would say is no, but I’ll still let people sit in my seat and ask questions if they want. It’s always a joy seeing people get wide-eyed when they step into the flight deck and their overall excitement of being up there!
In 2007 I was on a flight where the pilots opened the cockpit. It was super early in the morning and there were maybe 5 other people on the flight. It was a gorgeous day, they let me walk up and look out the front windshield. I was a bit shocked they did this post 9/11.
My 2 year old got to do that, too, in March. He loved it.
My mother use to work for a major airline in the late 90s early 2000. She would take me to work with her some days cause she knew I liked it. There I was 9-10 years old driving one of thr baggage carts to and from the plans. Would just kinda free roam around the airport helping do random ask task. It was the charleston west virgina airport. But after 9/11 it came to a very abrupt stop. Looking back on it I can’t believe that at one point that was considered normal. Especially hie strict airport are now days
I made a comment about this on another thread where someone asked what would someone born in 2000 not understand.
There was also the option for standby passengers to sit in the jump seat in the cockpit for short haul flights
Being allowed into a cockpit like that has to be a cool moment!
My brother still gets to sit in the cockpit and he’s turning 30 this week.
Yeah that shit won’t fly today.. Pun intended..
I went to the top of the WTC in June of 2001.
Its part of the reason why 9/11 was so traumatic.
Does the carpet match the curtains?
Before 9/11 it wasn’t uncommon for the “door” to the cockpit to just be ordinary drapes. Usually open too, so you could just look straight ahead through the front windows.
My family took a trip to Malaysia in 2000, we flew via Bahrain and I remember the biggest security checkpoint was when we had to disembark for refueling (or something) and we had to pass through metal detectors that basically beeped at every single person, while the machine gun armed guards looked on, bored. That was it.
I was 15 when 9/12 happened, and sometimes it feels weird remembering growing up in one world and becoming an adult just shortly thereafter in a completely, radically different one.
It was like the early 90’s and took my uncle to the Tallahassee airport and walked him all the way to the gate, no stops, no checkpoints. I was a kid and thought it was awesome.
IIRC we saw Burt Reynolds there.
So you’re a terrorist
I have a pic in the cockpit while over Alaska flying Vancouver to Tokyo in March 2001.
insert obligatory Airplane movie reference comment here
I was in Disney on 9/11! We got evacuated from the Animal Kingdom park and had no fucking idea what was going on
We went to Disney after 9/11 (that Christmas) because everything was so cheap. The place was also pretty deserted. I remember being able to get off rides and go back to the line and maybe have one group ahead of us. For a few years after we had some pretty extravagant vacations compared to normal as you could book lots of things so cheap as no one wanted to fly.
We also flew practically free on Hooters Air once (my mom was not happy) and had the whole plane to ourselves.
December 2000 I was 6 and we went to Canada. I remember being allowed in the cockpit, greatest moment of my life at that point.
For some reason, I pictured a lot more digital screens and less analog gauges. I guess I’m losing track of time.
But the REAL question is, where were you ON 9/11? Oh wait that doesn’t make sense.
Because so many kids hijack planes the FAA had to ban this terrifyingly dangerous practice for our safety.

Flying back from Hawaii last year and the pilot asked my four year old if he wanted to come up to the cockpit and take pictures. I was shocked they still let people do that. My son loved it.
They’ll still let kids sit in the cockpit and take a photo as long as the plane is parked at the gate. 👍🏼
My dad used to work for a major airline, I’ve probably spent more time in a cockpit than most non air crew lol. Crazy what we used to get away with.
My father is a retired airline pilot. Growing up pre 9/11 either myself or my brother would be in the cock pit for take off or landing sitting in the jump seat. This was only in the airline he flew for. Good times.
Wow, I bet those pilots felt stupid in retrospect. What if it turned out you were a terrorist? A scout sent by Al-Queda to test airline security?
/s because I think a lot of people might not understand this is a joke.
Before 9/11 back in 1996 when I was 11 flying with my parents, I got to see the beautiful sunrise from the cockpit of Gulf Air Boeing 767. That was one of most wonderful experience I ever had. I wanted and dreamt of becoming a pilot, but could not afford to be one. The captain and the first officer showed and explained me the controls.
The way I remember it, in the 80s on most any longer flight to a holiday destination the kids were invited to visit the cockpit. I was always too shy to go though.
Boeing 727. True classic. That brings back some memories.
