Amen
Iconic voice
“I don’t want to hear a love song
I got on this airplane just to fly
And I know there’s life below me
But all that you can show me is the prairie and the sky”
She is excellent. I love the Trio album with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt.
She was really good friends with Gram Parsons I visit the Joshua Tree Inn were they use to stay! Truly an amazing place I can see why they came here to play music.
Saw her live in the early 90s; fantastic.
She sings one of my favorite songs, wasn’t till I was older I found out it was a cover (Making Believe).
Trio albums break my heart
Roll along, roll on
Rose of Cimarron
Great and gorgeous in The Last Waltz
Goodbye and Red Dirt Girl are stellar!
Emmylou + her band were great at Beachroad Fest.
I agree!
Emmylou Harris is a fox, and there are no skippable tracks on *Luxury Liner*.
She did many of the vocals on Dylan’s Desire too. Ran into her a couple years ago at a Lucinda Williams concert.
Amazing musician and vocalist.
Love this woman and her music. Such a sweet person too!
Used to go see her way back when at The Charing Cross in Washington, DC.
Agreed.
My dad used to sing to her music when we were kids; late 70’s-early 80’s❤️❤️❤️❤️
I stumbled across a youtube video of First Aid Kit covering Red Dirt Girl and performing in front of Emmylou. Their song Emmylou brings me to tears. They performed it live in front of her and it was very moving.
I got to see her live last weekend!!! So special!
My high school math teacher has a huge crush on her – now I can see why
I just saw her at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park. She is still wonderful.
She asked me for a light one time I was working a show she was involved with and I had a lighter and I lit her clove cigarette and she thanked me and then I just about collapsed because well why wouldn’t I? She’s a glorious singer.
Back in 2005 during college, we took a friends RV and went to Farm Aid 20 in Tinley Park, IL. We slept in the hotel parking lot where artists and staff were staying/just a place to escape; right across from the venue. After eating breakfast, me and a friend were just sitting people watching waiting for a shuttle and Arlo Guthrie sat down about 10 feet from us and just started rolling a cigarette. Both of us were pretty giddy, but then all of the sudden I see Emmylou walk out of a door about 30-40 feet on down from us. When she turned and saw Arlo, the most genuine warm smile came across her face and she let out a gentle yell “Arloooo” as she quickly walked down to hug him. I’ll never forget that moment and the sincerity of both their reactions to seeing each other.
Her duets with Gram Parsons make me cry.
My opinion, and I don’t expect any agreement. My favorite work of hers is the work done on Bob Dylan’s album Desire
I found a liquid cure, for our landlocked blues
Emmylou is a gem. I’ve had the pleasure of working with her on several occasions and she is always an absolute class act. Not to mention she does a bunch of charity work as well as owns her own non-profit focusing on providing care and homes to rescue dogs once their time at the shelters has run out. How could you not love that?!

Her So Far Away duet with Mark Knopfler is absolutely phenomenal.
She was pretty. Then her hair turned grey and she was smokin’!
My stepfather and I were both huge ELH fans and while we were taking care of my mom while she was dying, we played ELH all day and night. It was the only thing that kept us sane, I think.
“If You Needed Me” was their special song. My stepdad also passed away some years ago, so one might say they are … together again.
I hadn’t heard of her until i heard red dirt girl. that song is so hauntingly beautiful, i was mesmerized, kept listening to it over and over. i’m still not sure if i’ve heard any other songs of hers, but man, that song is quite something. I grew up halfway across the world from rural Alabama, but that story could be just as well relatable there as well. I suppose such is the story of misery, it’s relatable anywhere. Same with Bon Jovi’s livin’ on a prayer, it’s also a story of misery, that one is also a story of hope, both just as universal, i suppose. Anyway, i digress, thank you, Emmylou Harris, you narrated perfectly the story of the life and death of a red dirt girl.
Willie Nelson said, “There are men who love Emmy Lou and men who haven’t met Emmy Lou”.
I love her on her own and I love her doing harmony.
I first fell in love with her singing harmony on Lyle Lovett’s Walk Through the Bottomland.
And then Trio.
Wrecking Ball is one of my all time favorite albums.
I’ve seen her several times by herself.
I wish I would have seen her with Mark Knopfler.
I wish I would have seen her sing Across the Border with Bruce Springsteen.
Ok, fine. I want to her any time she wants to sing, with anyone she wants to sing with.
I’m that kind of gal.
Her modesty & love of making music is iconic. She’d rather be doing barely-credited harmony on someone else’s album than her own. She just loves making music with other people most of all, and I love that about her.
I heard her voice for the first time on the Bright Eyes “I’m wide awake, it’s morning” album.
Thanks for posting! This is truly the coolest photo I’ve seen on this subreddit. I was still in kindergarten when I became a fan of her music. Other favorite artists have changed through the years, but Emmylou Harris is a constant favorite.
Did the wording of this post make anyone else google Emmylou Harris to make sure she was still alive?
