So what’s the history of these vehicles? A low-cost anti-tank weapon? Faster and more maneuverable? It seems pretty risky to put a big gun on what looks like a Jeep and go chasing armored tanks…
Used mostly in North Africa in the early days of the war. You will find them often referred to as “Purple Heart Wagons”. The armor could barely stop a 50 cal much less anything larger. More mobility than a towed gun, but much worse than a full tracked TD from later war.
Not sure what his function in the army was but I had a great-uncle who fought in North Africa during this time frame. Neat to see the primitive equipment
Very cool! 😎👍
M3 75mm gun carrier?
hope they had massive hearing protection
Early 40s.

Easiest way to tell the era is based on the equipment. The helmet with the thick brim is a Hawley fiber liner which was only used from around 41-43.
So everyone got to hide behind behind that big armor plate except the driver?
I think that the tank destroyer itself should be captioned in the photo – don’t leave him out!

Can you imagine taking on heavy tanks in these gunned trucks? Those are the bravest men
