1948 – Tribal chairman of the Mandan, Arikara, and Hidatsa tribes of North Dakota was crying because he was forced under the threat of death of all his people to sign over the tribes’ homeland on the fertile floodplain of the Missouri River.

Is there more context? Who threatened the tribe
This is cool, at all.
Obviously not cool, but important to remember.
This land shall be forever yours by treaty. Oh, wait…you’ve got oil? That’s ours. You’ve got uranium? That’s ours. You’ve got gaming revenue? That’s ours, too.
OP has no clue what sub this is
Nice of him to wear a suit, I guess?
Old school cool?
Holy shit there’s a bunch john (the fake tough guy) wayne loving racists in this comment section. Native Americans have been here at least 25000 years but likely longer and managed to thrive without destroying the land and causing mass extinctions. Stop trying to rationalize genocide.
There us should give back the land and $$$
Classic USA.
Genocidal land theft isn’t cool.
I live in a town (10k pop.) that sits on the Trail of Tears route. There are a few legacy names that own a large chunk of the real estate and surrounding lands. My last landlords family owned 50 commercial properties and 8,000 acres outside of town. They’re proud of how their families have been here for 200+ years and built the town. You never hear how the land was bought for 1$/acre in today’s money (40 shillings per 100 acres in 1777). They reasoned the natives gave up their right to the land for helping the British in the Revolutionary War.
They had a limit of 740 acres they could purchase from the county (640 for the man and 100 for the wife). The land was filled with beavers and lumber. Granted, it would be many decades before the infrastructure was built to fully monetize the land.
Feels bad man.
The white devil
They should sue, signing under duress
Is as good as having their lands stolen!
Evil people never change
Classic American imperialism.
Heartbreaking
It makes me ill that it wasn’t too long ago
In 1947, the 80th Congress approved PL 296 which appropriated funds for “Flood Control, General.” A contract was drawn up in 1948 for approval by the Three Affiliated Tribes. Indians feared that if they failed to consent to outlined terms, they would receive less adequate compensation in the future. In tears. Council Chairman George Gillette “consented” to the coercive piece of legislation. “The truth is, as everyone knows,” he said, “our Treaty of Fort Laramie…and our constitution are being torn to shreds by this contract”. By 1949, provisions for compensation were passed by the Senate and the House and signed into law by the president. In 1950, the tribes voted 525 out of 991 adults to accept the provisions of the act.
Makes me ill.
Exactly who made those threats?
And now this image will be used for internet points over and over. Poor guy would still be crying.
He understood the long-term goal and the locals only wanted short-term gains. Happens all over the world to the natives.
Wait…why is a picture of a crying native being forced (under threat of death) to sign over their land on old school cool?
Empire of the Sun. Great book that chronicles this period
>Professor Lillian Stone:
What happened was inevitable. The way it happened was unconscionable.
Last of the Dogman. (1995)
This is real life while idiots get on here and argue about Democrats and Republicans, as if there’s a difference anywhere other than paper.
The human race is the most dispicable disgusting race on the planet
Old school not cool 🙁
The land of the free….. In one picture.
I’m no expert on body language, but no white man in this picture appears to be in distress, or give any indication they think this is wrong to do.
Speaks volumes.

American progress off of the backs of the less fortunate. A true american story.
Well at least it’s an invalid contract since he signed it under duress.
And now the same people that would support stripping the natives from all there land , are complaining that they are being replaced.
